i've been playing with pandora for a while now, and i think the best way to create a station is to only thumbs-down songs you don't like, and to never thumbs-up a song (only bookmark, for your reference). i think that giving a thumbs-up will really limit what gets played on a station, and your station might start going in a direction that you didn't intend it to. but if you only thumbs-down songs, then it won't go in unintended directions.
i find myself thinking too much about whether i should thumbs-up a song or not. is this song representative enough of the type of sound i'm trying to achieve? it's usually really difficult to say. it's much easier to say that we simply don't like a song. pandora should then trim down the kind of songs it plays for you, and you'll eventually be left with songs that you don't dislike, which, hopefully, means they are songs you like.
the "problem" with this, however, is that you would need to create stations based on an artist, rather than a song, so that pandora has more qualities to work with (i'm guessing).. which means it could take a long time (a lot of thumbs-downing) to achieve the sound you want.
the reasoning against this is that thumbs-upping a song has the same effect as adding that song as a seed. hmm. ignore this entire post?
