travis - the boy with no name

i'm glad i downloaded this album, because i was getting pretty tired of the oversaturation of ho-hum music these days (then again, i always seem to feel this way after a couple days of trying the radio).

but i'm not saying that this album doesn't have its merits in an absolute sense. this is one of those albums that is like "i'm buying this cd cuz almost every song is good". it's just.. good music. what can i say. good songwriting. earnest? can music be earnest? i dunno. but that's what i think when i listen to this album.

another cooking experiment with broth

so i recently wrote about an easy way to cook using broth. i tried doing the same thing, this time in a pot, and this time using ground beef (1 lb). i used 2 things of zucchini, and half a thing of pre-cut mushrooms, and an onion. and beef broth. and 2 tomatos.

i cut up the zucchini and washed the mushrooms. i cut up the onion and sauteed it in the pot with olive oil, pepper, and a little salt (not too much cuz the broth is already salty), while i heated up the broth in a separate pot. i sauteed the onions until they were soft, maybe slightly brown. then i added garlic, and then the ground beef and more pepper, and i think some honey.

turns out, it was getting pretty wet. the beef was releasing a lot of liquid, or maybe it was the onions, or both. well, i just kept going. i dumped in the zucchini and mushrooms and stirred it around, then added the broth. ok so now it was pretty wet, like a soup, which isn't what i really wanted. i turned up the heat so that the liquid would evaporate.. but.. who was i kidding? i had added like 1.5 cups of broth. how did this work last time?? maybe cuz it wasn't in a pot last time. anyway, i just kept cooking, letting the zucchini and mushrooms cook.

for some reason, at this point, i added about 2 cut-up tomatoes, which i thought would enhance the beef flavor (which i found out it did). still a lot of liquid.. and i guess it didn't help that the zucchini and mushrooms released liquid as well.

i played some 3rd strike while everything continued to boil. i wasn't sure how long to cook everything, although i knew everything was more or less "done". i guess i was kinda not looking forward to eating soggy ground beef (and what was, by now, soggy zucchini and mushrooms). what to do with all the liquid?

i somehow got the idea to add pasta.. "cellentani" or whatever. basically curly penne pasta thingies. it's what i already had in the cupboard. i added about.. maybe half a pound.. and left the heat on medium-high for 12 minutes, which was the cooking time for the pasta. i figured the pasta would absorb all the liquid while it cooked.. and it totally did. the whole pot was a lot "drier" by the time the pasta was done cooking.. actually, relatively dry, but still moist.

it tastes pretty darn good, especially the pasta, since it absorbed all the flavor of the broth and other juices. so it turned out well. i'm glad cooking makes at least some sense.

How many squares of toilet paper do you use (at a time) after pooing?

how many squares of toilet paper do you use?

apparently, sheryl crow can somehow manage with 2 or 3.. per RESTROOM VISIT:

"I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. One of my favorites is in the area of forest conservation which we heavily rely on for oxygen. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required."

i guess she has extremely clean shits and washes her hands super well. or maybe she doesn't really care that it's not that clean down there after wiping. whatever.

i just know that i use 4 or 5 squares AT A TIME until it's clean (i'm a folder - maybe she's a crumpler? i'm having difficulty fathoming the logistics of how she does it, folding or crumpling).

time to vote on the new poll, inspired by sheryl crow.

nighttime

i just realized something about myself, and maybe you're like me.

i don't really "respect" the end of the day. i don't think about getting ready for bed unless i really have to. in fact, i just linger around, "keeping on" as if the day isn't over, or isn't going to end, as if i refuse to acknowledge that the day is over, until i get so sleepy that i just end up going to bed without having to think about it.

i think if i force myself to be aware that the day is ending, i'll have an easier time getting up in the morning, getting started in the morning. maybe getting anabolic quicker. or whatever. ok i don't know what that means, i just read it on kyle's protein shake powder mix bottle.

hard drive crash? mft and mftmirr bad? possible solution

one of my hard drives crashed the other day.. tried to do a chkdsk and got "unable to determine volume version and state". no good. used testdisk and got "mft and mft mirror are bad" or whatever. bad situation. horrible situation to be in.

so after a couple of days of trying to figure out how to repair my mft (aka master file table) and finding out that it's impossible cuz its backup (mftmirr) was also corrupted, i figured out the following process...

1. obtain GetDataBack. use default settings, and check all boxes in the options except for "Excessive search".
2. SPECIFY LOGFILE in the Environment tab of Options. you'll need it later.
3. select your corrupted drive in step 2, then hit next.
4. take a nap, run it overnight, whatever. my drive was 300gb and it took about 5 hours to scan.
5. when the scan is done, you'll probably see a bunch of folders that you recognize. that's good, recovering is straightforward (just select, right click -> copy).

if, however, you see files that have blank filenames, you will need to rename them yourself. the way to determine the filename is by using the ID number in the "ID" column of the Recovery Browser and by looking the logfile you specified in step 2:
a. let's say you have a file with a blank name. scroll to the right to see what its ID number is. let's say its ID number is 155.
b. open the log file and search for "ID[the ID number]", no quotes, where [the ID number] is the ID number from step a. hopefully something will be found, like this:

Added '' ID155, Mft#4E22 @sec 006080E3(2), parent 4E20, 3/12/2007

c. now, search for the Mft#, so in this case you would do a search for "4E22", no quotes. that should take you to the line with the filename you want, like so:

Index info added FileName=GGS3SRanBat2.1.divx, Mft=x4E22[x1], ParentMft=x4E20[x1], ( )

booya, you have your filename.

d. rename your blank-named file accordingly, then right-click -> Copy to recover.

this filename-recovery method works for directories too.

sometimes, a whole folder will be deleted, and you don't want to rename each thing individually. that's ok. select that folder and copy it, and when prompted with the "file already exists" message or whatever, just select the "rename all" option. so then you'll get a folder with files named like "(2)", "(3)", "(4)", etc. now, to rename them all, just go to the logfile and grab the filenames. usually the whole folder's contents will be listed in a group in the logfile. copy those lines into a new text file, and isolate the filenames by surrounding each side of the names with tab characters (search and replace is your friend). then copy paste into excel. now you should have a column of filenames, and columns of other stuff that was next to the filenames. all you need is the column with filenames. in excel, it's easy to create a sequence of numbers, just by dragging the lower-right corner of a number. ok, rest should be self-explanatory. you should ultimately get something like this:

ren (2) "01 astair.mp3"
ren (3) "02 acting like a fool.mp3"
ren (4) "03 tv gods.mp3"
ren (5) "04 shimmering fields.mp3"
ren (6) "05 movin' on.mp3"
ren (7) "B0001Z8OCK.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_[1].jpg"

just paste into your dos prompt.

hope this helps someone.

stage6 coincidence

so the craziest thing just happened at lunch today.

last night before bed, i'm watching some 3s videos, and i get the idea to ask a guy on stage6 where he got one of his 3s videos. so i log onto stage6 to send him a message.. but then i see that i have a new friend request from this guy, a student at UCSD. i check out his vids and whatnot, and do some random stuff. i make some lunch plans for the next day, one of which is to go to the UCSD bookstore to buy a textbook that i needed for a class that starts next tuesday.

this morning, though, i am a little late to get to work, so i decide to go to UCSD tomorrow instead. but then wendi calls me around noon, and says she's at the library and that the vendor fair is happening on library walk. so i'm like, ok cool, i'll pick up my book and hang out with her.

so i go to price center, which is packed during lunch as always. there's some fraternities/sororities rushing or something, and there's a band playing, blah blah blah. i get my book from the bookstore, then i walk through the food court inside, which i noticed is lacking a wendy's now. it's hella crammed, so i head over to round table.

outside round table, i see a guy talking with a girl, and i think huh, that guy kinda looks like the dood from stage6 last night.. maybe i should ask if he is. but then i'm like, ok, he's just another asian guy, and all asians look alike. so i go inside and get my pizza (2 slices of pepperoni, 1 slice mushroom).

after i get my pizza, i step outside round table and notice that the guy is still there talking with the girl. so i just walk up, and stand there. they look at me and i'm like, "hey is your name chris lee?" and he's like "yyyeah..." and i say "hey did u sign up for stage6 recently?" and there's a moment of confusion, and then his face lights up and he says "yeah!". i tell him i just approved his friend request last night and that i watched his videos. we talk about divx for a little bit, and he says that bruce lidl from divx gave a talk to his "youtube class" or something. there's some more chitchat, i give him my business card, we shake hands.. and that was it.

i met up with wendi and told her about what just happened. i spent the next 15 minutes just being amazed at how huge of a coincidence it all was.
