the self-improved guy

do you know this guy?

one day, he's thinking about his lifestyle, and he realizes that there's a lot that could be improved.. so he decides that his shitty rut has gone on too long, and he resolves to make changes.. to stop with everything he doesn't like about himself, and to turn a new leaf. he pinpoints and challenges certain aspects about his attitude, personality, and habits that he doesn't like, and finds ways to change them for the better, for good. and it works. he reaps the results of his efforts of self improvement, and is much happier.

maybe i should stop there, and let you think about whether you know such a person. cuz i would give props to that guy. that is commendable behavior. we should all take a page from his book, and study.

but this entry is actually about another guy.. one who is similar to the one i just described, in every way, actually, except with one addition: he starts rubbing it in to those around him about how his new ways are working out awesome. it's not an in-your-face type of rubbing in.. nothing like declaring from the rooftops that his new life is just so much better. it's more subtle. like.. asking very pointed questions during specific situations where he sees the other person is exhibiting attitudes and behaviors of his old lifestyle. or sort of loaded questions, to get the person to think.. questions that he asked himself during his own journey to realizing what was wrong in his life and how he could make things better.

basically, he sees others who he thinks are "suffering" from their seeming lack of analysis of their state, and he "does them a favor" by asking them the questions that he thinks they should ask themselves. they're the same questions he asked himself before, and maybe they got him to start thinking the right thoughts about how he could improve himself. but it's not a selfless act.. it's not during a friendly conversation that this different point of view is offered and encouraging story about trial and tribulation is shared. it's more of a way to show that he's gone through the same thing, but was intelligent enough to change things for the better, and is now so above where he used to be.. implying that he is actually more intelligent than the other person.

it's easier to figure out who this guy is when he isn't really your friend and he asks you those kinds of questions. usually he sounds overly positive when he's talking to you and asking the questions, but every question just sounds like, "wait.. don't you think that's just a stupid way to think about things?" or maybe he starts asking you questions about things that he feels are important to think about, when you don't care about them, whether you've thought about them before or not.

anyway, if you know him, he's a dick. i just realized that i know of two or three guys who are like this (yes, they are all male). they are totally different people, but they all share that characteristic.

different from vs different than

which is correct? "this is different from that", or "this is different than that"?

i had looked this up on common errors in english because i needed it for a doc at work. not much of an explanation there, which is usually OK because most of the time the errors are self explanatory.. u either know it or u don't.. but i think i use from/than almost interchangeably, so i needed some reasoning to pick one or the other.

then i was thinking yesterday that it definitely should be "different FROM", cuz u wouldn't say "this differs than that", would u? no. u would say "this differs from that". hence, "this is different from that" would follow. w00t.

throat boogers

ok, kind of a gross topic, but does anyone ever get what i call "throat boogers"? i've gotten several of them in the past, and i think there might be one forming in my throat right now, so i googled for the first thing i thought of, which was "throat boogers".. and the first link was a funny account from someone else who had the same thing:

food from china

kyle thought i was being weird when i didn't want to eat the organic kidney beans i'd purchased from trader joes after i noticed that it was actually a product of china. my parents had told me some gross stories about how the chinese will cut corners to save money, at the expense of food safety. i decided to google "is it safe to eat beans from china?" (hehe) and actually found this article written by someone who, like i, was concerned about food safety when he noticed that his can of organic beans was from china.

i read the article, as well as the NPR article (good article) that is linked to in the blog entry, as well as some stuff from china that has been recently rejected by the FDA, as well as the reasons for rejection. it's especially disturbing when the reason is because the food is "FILTHY": "The article appears to consist in whole or in part of a filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance or be otherwise unfit for food."

gross.
